Our Fallen Heroes

June 21, 2007

By now, I imagine you have heard about the tragedy suffered in Charleston Monday night when nine heroic, brave firefighters perished in a horrific fire at a local furniture store here in Charleston (SC). Our headquarters are just across town from the store and many of our employees either live near the area or are familiar with the location. In addition, several of our employees are either related to or friends with the victims and their families.

Many of our employees want to donate money to the City of Charleston Fireman’s Fund, so I have authorized a fund to be set up for these firemen’s families and that the company will match employee donations, dollar for dollar, up to $5,000. The feedback I’ve been receiving from our employees is that they just want to help these folks through an incredibly challenging time. This is nothing new for our employees. Two years ago, they raised $15,000 for victims of Hurricane Katrina and this past spring they raised another $26,000 for a fellow employee, who is confined to a wheelchair and is in need of a new speciality van. Each time, the company matched the funds donated by our employees.

In closing, I am extremely proud to be associated with our employees. Time and again, they have shown that they are caring individuals, and for this tragedy they are showing their true colors once again.
